D-Link DNS-320/DNS-320L/DNS-325/DNS-327L/DNS-340L/DNS-345 SMB Login cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as problematic has been reported in D-Link DNS-320, DNS-320L, DNS-325, DNS-327L, DNS-340L and DNS-345. This affects an unknown part of the component SMB Login Handler. This manipulation of the argument Username causes cross site scripting. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. Furthermore, there is an exploit available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in D-Link DNS-320, DNS-320L, DNS-325, DNS-327L, DNS-340L and DNS-345. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component SMB Login Handler. The manipulation of the argument Username with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. As an impact it is known to affect integrity.

The weakness was shared 08/02/2016 by Benjamin Daniel Mussler (Website). The advisory is shared at b.fl7.de. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue. The advisory points out:

The device's administrative web interface contains a **Stored Cross-Site Scripting vulnerability, exploitable through an unauthenticated SMB login attempt (445/tcp)**. The injected code is executed when the victim logs into the administrative web interface.

A public exploit has been developed by Benjamin Daniel Mussler in Shell and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 184 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The code used by the exploit is:

smbclient -U '<img
src=&#47;cgi-bin&#47;account_mgr.cgi?cmd=cgi_adduser_to_session&s_name=Volume_1&ftp=true&read_list=&write_list=baduser&decline_list=&username=baduser&>'
 -N  '\\x\Volume_1' -I <TARGET IP>

smbclient -U '<img src=&#47;cgi-bin&#47;account_mgr.cgi?cmd=cgi_user_add&name=baduser&pw=badpass&>' -N  '\\x\Volume_1'
-I <TARGET IP>

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
