QEMU ESP/NCR53C9x Controller Emulation hw/scsi/esp.c esp_do_dma out-of-bounds write

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (version now known). Affected by this issue is the function esp_do_dma of the file hw/scsi/esp.c of the component ESP/NCR53C9x Controller Emulation. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The esp_do_dma function in hw/scsi/esp.c in QEMU (aka Quick Emulator), when built with ESP/NCR53C9x controller emulation support, allows local guest OS administrators to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds write and QEMU process crash) or execute arbitrary code on the QEMU host via vectors involving DMA read into ESP command buffer.

The weakness was published 09/07/2016 by Li Qiang (Website). The advisory is available at git.qemu.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-6351 since 07/26/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 92966 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS / 14.04 LTS / 16.04 LTS : qemu, qemu-kvm regression (USN-3047-2)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196546 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Qemu, Qemu-kvm Vulnerabilities (USN-3047-1)).
