Details
A vulnerability was found in Wireshark up to 2.0.5 (Packet Analyzer Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function snprintf of the file epan/dissectors/packet-h225.c of the component H.225 Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
epan/dissectors/packet-h225.c in the H.225 dissector in Wireshark 2.x before 2.0.6 calls snprintf with one of its input buffers as the output buffer, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (copy overlap and application crash) via a crafted packet.
The weakness was presented 09/09/2016 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at debian.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-7176 since 09/08/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
