A vulnerability has been found in PowerDNS up to 3.4.9 (Domain Name Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component Authoritative Server Query Handler. PowerDNS (aka pdns) Authoritative Server before 3.4.10 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (backend CPU consumption) via a long qname.

The weakness was presented 09/09/2016 by Florian Heinz and Martin Kluge as PowerDNS Security Advisory 2016-01 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at doc.powerdns.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-5426 since 06/10/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
