A vulnerability classified as critical was found in PowerDNS Authoritative Server up to 4.0.0 (Domain Name Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component AXFR/IXFR Response Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. PowerDNS (aka pdns) Authoritative Server before 4.0.1 allows remote primary DNS servers to cause a denial of service (memory exhaustion and secondary DNS server crash) via a large (1) AXFR or (2) IXFR response.
The weakness was disclosed 09/26/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.opensuse.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-6172 since 07/06/2016. The attack can be launched remotely.
