Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in PHP up to 5.6.25/7.0.10 (Programming Language Software). Affected by this issue is the function zval_delref_p. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability.
The weakness was disclosed 09/15/2016 as Version 7.0.11 as confirmed changelog (Website). The advisory is available at php.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-7411. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196592 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Php5, Php7.0 Vulnerabilities (USN-3095-1)).
Upgrading to version 5.6.26 or 7.0.11 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
