Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in FFmpeg 1.0 (Multimedia Processing Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function decode_init of the file libavcodec/huffyuv.c. The manipulation as part of a Width leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:
The decode_init function in libavcodec/huffyuv.c in FFmpeg before 1.1 allows remote attackers to have an unspecified impact via a crafted width in huffyuv data with the predictor set to median and the colorspace set to YUV422P, which triggers an out-of-bounds array access.
The issue has been introduced in 09/30/2012. The weakness was presented 11/29/2012 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind (j00ru) with Google Security Team as huffyuvdec: check width more completely, avoid out of array accesses as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.videolan.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the project team. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-0848 since 01/07/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 60 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79573 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : ffmpeg (MDVSA-2014:227)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at git.videolan.org. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (89878), Tenable (79573), SecurityFocus (BID 60492†), OSVDB (94257†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-45869†).
