Details
A vulnerability was found in Dräger Infinity Explorer C700 on WinXP (Medical Device Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the component GUI. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The bug was discovered 03/08/2016. The weakness was disclosed 01/22/2019 by Marc Ruef and Rocco Gagliardi with scip AG as VulDB 91697 / ICS-VU-525696-2 as confirmed entry (VulDB). The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Dräger. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-19012. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
A private exploit has been developed by Marc Ruef/Rocco Gagliardi in Binary. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 196 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Upgrading to version Windows 7 Release VG9.1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The first gen, MS22249, uses Windows XP base and does not support the upgrade. Following successful testing a customer facing report is made available and customers are encouraged to apply the patches.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at SecurityFocus (BID 106683†). ics-cert.us-cert.gov is providing further details.
