A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in libarchive up to 3.1.x (File Compression Software). This issue affects the function archive_string_append of the file archive_string.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The archive_string_append function in archive_string.c in libarchive before 3.2.0 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted cab files, related to "overlapping memcpy."
The weakness was disclosed 09/20/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.opensuse.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-8918 since 06/17/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation.
