A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in libarchive up to 3.1.x (File Compression Software). Affected is the function lha_read_file_extended_header of the file archive_read_support_format_lha.c of the component LZH/LHA File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The lha_read_file_extended_header function in archive_read_support_format_lha.c in libarchive before 3.2.0 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds heap) via a crafted (1) lzh or (2) lha file.
The weakness was presented 09/20/2016 (Website). The advisory is available at lists.opensuse.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-8919 since 06/17/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication.
