CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Wireshark up to 1.8.7 (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the file packet-rdp.c of the component RDP Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

epan/dissectors/packet-rdp.c in the RDP dissector in Wireshark 1.8.x before 1.8.8 does not validate return values during checks for data availability, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted packet.

The weakness was released 10/14/2012 by Laurent Butti as wnpa-sec-2013-36 as not defined bulletin (Website). The advisory is shared at wireshark.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-4078 since 06/09/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66910 (Debian DSA-2709-1 : wireshark - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166238 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for wireshark (SUSE-SU-2013:1276-1)).

Upgrading to version 1.8.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at anonsvn.wireshark.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 9 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
