LibTIFF up to 4.0.6 tiff2rgba cvt_by_strip/cvt_by_tile TIFF Image out-of-bounds write

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in LibTIFF up to 4.0.6 (Image Processing Software). Affected is the function cvt_by_strip/cvt_by_tile of the component tiff2rgba. The manipulation as part of a TIFF Image leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple integer overflows in the (1) cvt_by_strip and (2) cvt_by_tile functions in the tiff2rgba tool in LibTIFF 4.0.6 and earlier, when -b mode is enabled, allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or execute arbitrary code via a crafted TIFF image, which triggers an out-of-bounds write.

The weakness was disclosed 09/21/2016 by Security Team with Qihoo 360 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.maptools.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-3945 since 04/01/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 92696 (RHEL 7 : libtiff (RHSA-2016:1546)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 236058 (Red Hat Update for libtiff (RHSA-2016:1547)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (92696) and SecurityFocus (BID 85960†). The entries VDB-68478, VDB-80138, VDB-80155 and VDB-91811 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
