A vulnerability was found in libarchive up to 3.2.0 (File Compression Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function parse_codes of the file archive_read_support_format_rar.c of the component RAR File Handler. The manipulation with the input value 0 leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Heap-based buffer overflow in the parse_codes function in archive_read_support_format_rar.c in libarchive before 3.2.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a RAR file with a zero-sized dictionary.
The weakness was disclosed 09/21/2016 by Cisco with Cisco Talos (Website). The advisory is shared at blog.talosintel.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-4302 since 04/27/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
