A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in OpenSSL 1.0.1/1.0.2 (Network Encryption Software). Affected is the function BN_bn2dec. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability.
The weakness was disclosed 09/22/2016 by Shi Lei as 20160922.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at openssl.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-2182 since 01/29/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 351322 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for openssl: AL2012-2018-245).
Upgrading to version 1.0.1u or 1.0.2i eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
