A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in OpenSSL 1.0.1/1.0.2 (Network Encryption Software). Affected is an unknown code block of the component Certificate Message Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability.
The weakness was presented 09/22/2016 by Shi Lei with Qihoo 360 as 20160922.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at openssl.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-6306 since 07/26/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 351322 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for openssl: AL2012-2018-245).
Upgrading to version 1.0.1u or 1.0.2i eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
