Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in OpenSSL 1.1.0 (Network Encryption Software). Affected by this issue is the function dtls1_preprocess_fragment of the component DTLS Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory allocation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-789. The product allocates memory based on an untrusted, large size value, but it does not ensure that the size is within expected limits, allowing arbitrary amounts of memory to be allocated. Impacted is availability.
The weakness was published 09/22/2016 by Shi Lei with Qihoo 360 as 20160922.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at openssl.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-6308 since 07/26/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
