Details
A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL up to 1.0.1t/1.0.2h (Network Encryption Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code of the file s3_clnt.c/s3_srvr.c of the component Certificate Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The certificate parser in OpenSSL before 1.0.1u and 1.0.2 before 1.0.2i might allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read) via crafted certificate operations, related to s3_clnt.c and s3_srvr.c.
The bug was discovered 09/22/2016. The weakness was released 09/26/2016 by Shi Lei with Qihoo 360 as USN-3087-1 (Website). The advisory is shared at kb.juniper.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-6306 since 07/26/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95255 (AIX OpenSSL Advisory : openssl_advisory21.asc (SWEET32)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 316384 (Cisco Unity Express OpenSSL Multiple Vulnerabilities (cisco-sa-20160927-openssl)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.1u or 1.0.2i eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (95255) and SecurityFocus (BID 93153†).
