A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL up to 1.1.0 (Network Encryption Software). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the file statem/statem_dtls.c of the component DTLS Handler. statem/statem_dtls.c in the DTLS implementation in OpenSSL 1.1.0 before 1.1.0a allocates memory before checking for an excessive length, which might allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via crafted DTLS messages.
The bug was discovered 09/22/2016. The weakness was presented 09/26/2016 by Shi Lei with Qihoo 360 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.juniper.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-6308 since 07/26/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
