A vulnerability was found in XenSource Xen 4.4.x/4.5.x/4.6.x/4.7.x (Virtualization Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component CR0.EM/CR0.TS. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability (Memory). Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The weakness was disclosed 10/04/2016 by Jan Beulich with SuSE as XSA-190 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is available at xenbits.xen.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-7777 since 09/09/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 900047 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 276203 (Fedora Security Update for xen (FEDORA-2016-81e5a36d8c)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
