The xhci_ring_fetch function in hw/usb/hcd-xhci.c in QEMU (aka Quick Emulator) allows local guest OS administrators to cause a denial of service (infinite loop and QEMU process crash) by leveraging failure to limit the number of link Transfer Request Blocks (TRB) to process.
The weakness was disclosed 11/04/2016 by Li Qiang with 360.cn Inc. (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at git.qemu.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-8576 since 10/10/2016. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 900047 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 276208 (Fedora Security Update for qemu (FEDORA-2016-a56fb613a8)).
Applying the patch 05f43d44e4bc26611ce25fd7d726e483f73363ce is able to eliminate this problem.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (900047) and SecurityFocus (BID 93469†). The entries VDB-92454, VDB-92455, VDB-92462 and VDB-93310 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
