CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as critical has been detected in X.org libXfixes. Affected is an unknown function. The manipulation leads to integer overflow. This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2016-7944. Remote exploitation of the attack is possible. No exploit is available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in X.org libXfixes (affected version not known). It has been rated as very critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Integer overflow in X.org libXfixes before 5.0.3 on 32-bit platforms might allow remote X servers to gain privileges via a length value of INT_MAX, which triggers the client to stop reading data and get out of sync.

The weakness was published 10/05/2016 by Tobias Stoeckmann with OpenBSD (Website). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. The public release has been coordinated with X.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-7944 since 09/09/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/22/2022).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 900046 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169243 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for X Window System client libraries (SUSE-SU-2016:2505-1)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (900046), SecurityFocus (BID 93361†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1036945†). Similar entries are available at VDB-92463, VDB-92464, VDB-92466 and VDB-92467. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
