SAP NetWeaver 7.40 insufficient logging

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2016-7437. The attack must be carried out locally. There is no available exploit. Applying a patch is the recommended action to fix this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in SAP NetWeaver 7.40 (Solution Stack Software). This issue affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a insufficient logging vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-778. When a security-critical event occurs, the product either does not record the event or omits important details about the event when logging it. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The weakness was presented 10/11/2016 by Emiliano J. Fausto as ONAPSIS-2016-051 as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-7437 since 09/09/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1562.002 for this issue. The advisory points out:

Even when configuring the parameter rfc/callback_security_method and the SAP Security Audit Log to consider RFC callbacks events (Accepted/Rejected), both events DUI/DUJ will be logged in the SAP Security Audit Log as Non-critical. As the information provided by the SAP Security Audit Log to the security expert is inaccurate, filtering out non-critical events will also filter rejected attempts to execute RFC function callbacks.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 282 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at SecurityFocus (BID 93503†). See VDB-92691 for similar entry. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
