ISC BIND up to 9.8.4/9.9.2 Packet Option DNS Packet input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in ISC BIND up to 9.8.4/9.9.2. Affected is an unknown function of the component Packet Option Handler. Performing a manipulation as part of DNS Packet results in input validation. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-2848. Remote exploitation of the attack is possible. No exploit is available. It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in ISC BIND up to 9.8.4/9.9.2 (Domain Name Software). This affects some unknown processing of the component Packet Option Handler. The manipulation as part of a DNS Packet leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

ISC BIND 9.1.0 through 9.8.4-P2 and 9.9.0 through 9.9.2-P2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (assertion failure and daemon exit) via malformed options data in an OPT resource record.

The weakness was published 10/20/2016 by Toshifumi Sakaguchi as AA-01433 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.isc.org. The vendor was not involved in the public release. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-2848 since 03/06/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The advisory points out:

A packet with a malformed options section can be used to deliberately trigger an assertion failure affecting versions of BIND which do not contain change #3548, which was first included in ISC BIND 9 releases in May 2013.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94192 (RHEL 5 : bind97 (RHSA-2016:2094)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 236125 (Red Hat Update for bind (RHSA-2016:2099)).

Upgrading to version 9.9.9-P3, 9.10.4-P3 or 9.11.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The knowledge base article contains the following remark:

Current ISC versions of BIND are safe from this vulnerability, but repackaged versions distributed by other parties may be vulnerable if they were forked from ISC's source before change #3548.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (94192), SecurityFocus (BID 93809†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1037073†). Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
