Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in SPIP 3.1.1/3.1.2 (Content Management System). This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the file valider_xml. The manipulation of the argument var_url with the input value file:///etc leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
Directory traversal vulnerability in ecrire/exec/valider_xml.php in SPIP 3.1.2 and earlier allows remote attackers to enumerate the files on the system via the var_url parameter in a valider_xml action.

The weakness was released 10/12/2016 by Nicolas Chatelain with Sysdream as CVE-2016-7982: SPIP 3.1.1/3.1.2 File Enumeration / Path Traversal as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-7982 since 09/09/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006. Responsible for the vulnerability is the following code:
echo "<h1>", $titre, '<br>', $bandeau, '</h1>',
"<div style='text-align: center'>", $onfocus, "</div>",
$res,
fin_page();It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 13 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94476 (Debian DLA-695-1 : spip security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11709 (SPIP Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 3.1.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
