SPIP up to 3.1.2 valider_xml is_dir server-side request forgery

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in SPIP up to 3.1.2. This affects the function is_dir of the file valider_xml. The manipulation results in server-side request forgery. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-7999. The attack may be performed from remote. In addition, an exploit is available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in SPIP up to 3.1.2 (Content Management System). Affected is the function is_dir of the file valider_xml. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a server-side request forgery vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-918. The web server receives a URL or similar request from an upstream component and retrieves the contents of this URL, but it does not sufficiently ensure that the request is being sent to the expected destination. This is going to have an impact on integrity. CVE summarizes:

ecrire/exec/valider_xml.php in SPIP 3.1.2 and earlier allows remote attackers to conduct server side request forgery (SSRF) attacks via a URL in the var_url parameter in a valider_xml action.

The bug was discovered 09/15/2016. The weakness was presented 10/12/2016 by Nicolas Chatelain with Sysdream Labs as CVE-2016-7999: SPIP 3.1.2 Server Side Request Forgery as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is available at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-7999 since 09/09/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The reason for this vulnerability is this part of code:

$res = $transformer_xml(recuperer_page($url));

The exploit is shared for download at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 12 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94476 (Debian DLA-695-1 : spip security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11709 (SPIP Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 3.1.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (94476) and SecurityFocus (BID 93451†). See VDB-93006, VDB-93007, VDB-93016 and VDB-93017 for similar entries. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
