Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.32 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component IP_REPOPTS. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
A certain Red Hat patch for the Linux kernel 2.6.32 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6 allows local users to cause a denial of service (invalid free operation and system crash) or possibly gain privileges via a sendmsg system call with the IP_RETOPTS option, as demonstrated by hemlock.c. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incorrect fix for CVE-2012-3552.
The issue has been introduced in 12/03/2009. The weakness was published 06/30/2013 by Steven Ciaburri with Rack911 as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release happened without involvement of Linux. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-2224 since 02/19/2013. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in C and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at rack911.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1305 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78974 (RHEL 6 : kernel (RHSA-2013:1450)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156670 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for Kernel (ELSA-2013-1166)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (85381), Tenable (78974), SecurityFocus (BID 60858†), OSVDB (94706†) and Secunia (SA53899†). Similar entry is available at VDB-9304. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
