Linux Kernel 3.9.4 AF_KEY key_notify_sa_flush/key_notify_policy_flush sadb_msg_reserved memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 3.9.4 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function key_notify_sa_flush/key_notify_policy_flush of the component AF_KEY. The manipulation of the argument sadb_msg_reserved with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

The (1) key_notify_sa_flush and (2) key_notify_policy_flush functions in net/key/af_key.c in the Linux kernel before 3.10 do not initialize certain structure members, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel heap memory by reading a broadcast message from the notify interface of an IPSec key_socket.

The weakness was shared 06/26/2013 by Marcus Meissner with SuSE as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-2234 since 02/19/2013. The attack needs to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70222 (Amazon Linux AMI : kernel (ALAS-2013-218)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350526 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAS-2013-218).

Upgrading to version 3.10 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (85559), Tenable (70222), OSVDB (94698†), Secunia (SA54311†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-40701†). The entries VDB-7997, VDB-8073, VDB-8484 and VDB-8499 are related to this item. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
