Details
A vulnerability has been found in Redis up to 3.2.3 and classified as very critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component Command Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
A buffer overflow in Redis 3.2.x prior to 3.2.4 causes arbitrary code execution when a crafted command is sent. An out of bounds write vulnerability exists in the handling of the client-output-buffer-limit option during the CONFIG SET command for the Redis data structure store. A crafted CONFIG SET command can lead to an out of bounds write potentially resulting in code execution.
The weakness was disclosed 10/28/2016 by Cisco with Cisco Talos (Website). The advisory is shared for download at talosintelligence.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-8339 since 09/28/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/28/2022).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 97259 (GLSA-201702-16 : Redis: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170558 (OpenSUSE Security Update for redis (openSUSE-SU-2017:2994-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.2.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (97259) and SecurityFocus (BID 93283†). The entry VDB-108593 is pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
