Details
A vulnerability was found in dotCMS up to 3.3.0 (Content Management System). It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the file categoriesServlet. The manipulation of the argument sort with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
SQL injection vulnerability in the categoriesServlet servlet in dotCMS before 3.3.1 allows remote not authenticated attackers to execute arbitrary SQL commands via the sort parameter.
The weakness was published 10/31/2016 by Elar Lang as Multiple SQL injection vulnerabilities in dotCMS (8x CVE) as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-8902 since 10/24/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/29/2022). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1505.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 93 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
