A vulnerability was found in dotCMS up to 3.3.0 (Content Management System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component Templates Pages. The manipulation of the argument _EXT_13_orderby with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-89. SQL injection vulnerability in the "Site Browser > Templates pages" screen in dotCMS before 3.3.1 allows remote authenticated attackers to execute arbitrary SQL commands via the orderby parameter.
The weakness was released 10/31/2016 by Elar Lang as Multiple SQL injection vulnerabilities in dotCMS (8x CVE) as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-8903 since 10/24/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1505 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 93 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Upgrading to version 3.3.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
