Summary
A vulnerability labeled as problematic has been found in Linux Kernel 3.10. The affected element is the function ip6_sk_dst_check of the file net/ipv6/ip6_output.c of the component AF_INET6 Socket. Executing a manipulation can lead to input validation.
The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-2232. Furthermore, there is an exploit available.
It is best practice to apply a patch to resolve this issue.
Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel 3.10 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects the function ip6_sk_dst_check of the file net/ipv6/ip6_output.c of the component AF_INET6 Socket. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
The ip6_sk_dst_check function in net/ipv6/ip6_output.c in the Linux kernel before 3.10 allows local users to cause a denial of service (system crash) by using an AF_INET6 socket for a connection to an IPv4 interface.
The weakness was shared 06/26/2013 by Marcus Meissner with SuSE as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is available at seclists.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-2232 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
It is possible to download the exploit at git.kernel.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68861 (Fedora 19 : kernel-3.9.9-302.fc19 (2013-12901)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350526 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAS-2013-218). The advisory illustrates:
Dave Jones can reproduce immediate crash with 'trinity -q -l off -n -c sendmsg -c connect'.
Applying the patch patch-3.10 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (85560), Tenable (68861), OSVDB (94793†), Secunia (SA54311†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-40700†). The entries VDB-7997, VDB-8073, VDB-8484 and VDB-8499 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
