The kernel API in Microsoft Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, and Windows 7 SP1 mishandles permissions, which allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application, aka "Windows Kernel Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability."

The weakness was shared 11/08/2016 by Mateusz Jurczyk (rshaw) with Google Project Zero as MS16-139 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-7216 since 09/09/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 94640 (MS16-139: Security Update for Windows Kernel (3199720)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
