Details
A vulnerability was found in PHP up to 5.6.27/7.0.12 (Programming Language Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function gdImageAALine of the component GD Extension. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was released 11/10/2016 as confirmed changelog (Website). The advisory is shared for download at php.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-9933. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175905 (Debian Security Update for php5 (DSA 3732-1)).
Upgrading to version 5.6.28 or 7.0.13 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
