Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in HDF5 1.8.16 (Database Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component Message Type Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The library's failure to check if certain message types support a particular flag, the HDF5 1.8.16 library will cast the structure to an alternative structure and then assign to fields that aren't supported by the message type and the library will write outside the bounds of the heap buffer. This can lead to code execution under the context of the library.
The bug was discovered 11/17/2016. The weakness was shared 11/18/2016 by Cisco with Cisco Talos (Website). The advisory is shared for download at talosintelligence.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-4332 since 04/27/2016. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
