Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in HDF5 1.8.16 (Database Software). This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Array Space Allocator. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The HDF5 1.8.16 library allocating space for the array using a value from the file has an impact within the loop for initializing said array allowing a value within the file to modify the loop's terminator. Due to this, an aggressor can cause the loop's index to point outside the bounds of the array when initializing it.
The bug was discovered 11/17/2016. The weakness was published 11/18/2016 by Cisco with Cisco Talos (Website). The advisory is shared at talosintelligence.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2016-4333 since 04/27/2016. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95414 (Debian DSA-3727-1 : hdf5 - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175897 (Debian Security Update for hdf5 (DSA 3727-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (95414) and SecurityFocus (BID 94416†). Similar entries are available at VDB-93662, VDB-93663 and VDB-93664. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
