Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in SPIP 3.1 (Content Management System). This affects an unknown code block of the component Password Reset. The manipulation as part of a Host Header leads to a privileges management vulnerability (Reflected). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was presented 11/17/2016 by Tim Coen with Curesec Research Team as SPIP 3.1: XSS & Host Header Injection as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the project team. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue. The advisory points out:
The application takes the Host Header and uses it in a password reset email. As the Host Header is user-controlled, an attacker can set it to arbitrary values.
A public exploit has been developed by Tim Coen and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 137 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Upgrading to version 3.1.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
