A vulnerability has been found in SPIP 3.1 (Content Management System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the file /spip/ecrire/ of the component Cookie Handler. The manipulation of the argument exec with the input value info leads to a privileges management vulnerability (httponly). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was shared 11/17/2016 by Tim Coen with Curesec Research Team as SPIP 3.1: XSS & Host Header Injection as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is available at seclists.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project. The phpinfo page discloses httpOnly cookies such as session cookies, making it slightly easier to exploit XSS vulnerabilities.
A public exploit has been developed by Tim Coen and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 137 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Upgrading to version 3.1.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
