A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Lepton CMS 2.2.2 (Content Management System). This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the file /LEPTON_stable_2.2.2/upload/admins/pages/index.php of the component Search. The manipulation of the argument terms with the input value union select username,2,3,4,5,6,password,email,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23,24 from lep_users -- - leads to a sql injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was published 11/17/2016 by Tim Coen with Curesec Research Team as Lepton 2.2.2: SQL Injection as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1505.
A public exploit has been developed by Tim Coen in HTTP POST Request and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 169 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:LEPTON_stable_2.2.2/upload/admins/pages/index.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
Upgrading to version 2.3.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at lepton-cms.org. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
