Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Memcached 1.4.31. This affects the function process_bin_update. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple integer overflows in process_bin_update function in Memcached, which is responsible for processing multiple commands of Memcached binary protocol, can be abused to cause heap overflow and lead to remote code execution.
The bug was discovered 10/31/2016. The weakness was released 10/31/2016 by Aleksandar Nikolic with Cisco Talos as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at talosintelligence.com. The public release was coordinated with the project team. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-8705 since 10/17/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
