Details
A vulnerability has been found in Memcached 1.4.31 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function process_bin_sasl_auth. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
An integer overflow in process_bin_sasl_auth function in Memcached, which is responsible for authentication commands of Memcached binary protocol, can be abused to cause heap overflow and lead to remote code execution.
The bug was discovered 10/31/2016. The weakness was disclosed 10/31/2016 by Aleksandar Nikolic with Cisco Talos as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at talosintelligence.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-8706 since 10/17/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95291 (RHEL 7 : memcached (RHSA-2016:2819)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196618 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Memcached Vulnerabilities (USN-3120-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
