Linux Kernel up to 4.7.4 uaccess.h __get_user_asm_ex information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.7.4 (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function __get_user_asm_ex of the file arch/x86/include/asm/uaccess.h. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

The __get_user_asm_ex macro in arch/x86/include/asm/uaccess.h in the Linux kernel before 4.7.5 does not initialize a certain integer variable, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel stack memory by triggering failure of a get_user_ex call.

The bug was discovered 09/15/2016. The weakness was shared 11/28/2016 (Website). The advisory is shared at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-9178 since 11/04/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation requires a authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 73 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95702 (openSUSE Security Update : the Linux Kernel (openSUSE-2016-1428)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169574 (OpenSuSE Security Update for the Linux Kernel (openSUSE-SU-2016:3058-1)).

Upgrading to version 4.7.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (95702) and SecurityFocus (BID 94144†). The entries VDB-93467, VDB-93468, VDB-93490 and VDB-93845 are related to this item. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
