Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.8.11 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component cgroup. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability (Hang). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
The cgroup offline implementation in the Linux kernel through 4.8.11 mishandles certain drain operations, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (system hang) by leveraging access to a container environment for executing a crafted application, as demonstrated by trinity.
The bug was discovered 11/07/2016. The weakness was published 11/28/2016 (Website). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-9191 since 11/05/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 20 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 97357 (Debian DSA-3791-1 : linux - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196704 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux, Linux-snapdragon Vulnerabilities (USN-3208-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (97357) and SecurityFocus (BID 94129†). Similar entries are available at VDB-95265, VDB-96557, VDB-96563 and VDB-96952. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
