A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg up to 1.2.1 (Multimedia Processing Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is the function ff_vc1_parse_frame_header_adv of the file libavcodec/vc1.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a array index vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-129. The product uses untrusted input when calculating or using an array index, but the product does not validate or incorrectly validates the index to ensure the index references a valid position within the array. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was released 05/15/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind with Google Security Team as vc1dec: Do not allow field_mode to change after the first header as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.videolan.org. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
