Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in IBM QRadar SIEM up to 7.2.6 (Log Management Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component Process Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a os command injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-78. The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
IBM QRadar SIEM 7.1 before MR2 Patch 13 and 7.2 before 7.2.7 executes unspecified processes at an incorrect privilege level, which makes it easier for remote authenticated users to obtain root access by leveraging a command-injection issue.
The bug was discovered 07/26/2016. The weakness was presented 11/30/2016 by ryan with IBM X-Force (Website). The advisory is shared for download at www-01.ibm.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-2876 since 03/09/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1202.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 127 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
Upgrading to version 7.2.7 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at SecurityFocus (BID 95001†). See VDB-93911, VDB-93910, VDB-93909 and VDB-93907 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
