Details
A vulnerability was found in LibTIFF up to 4.0.3 (Image Processing Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the file tools/bmp2tiff.c of the component BMP File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Integer overflow in tools/bmp2tiff.c in LibTIFF before 4.0.4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer over-read), or possibly obtain sensitive information from process memory, via crafted width and length values in RLE4 or RLE8 data in a BMP file.
The bug was discovered 12/06/2016. The weakness was disclosed 12/06/2016 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at download.osgeo.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-8870 since 05/02/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication.
