Microsoft .NET Framework up to 4.5 Array code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2/3.5/3.5.1/4/4.5 (Programming Language Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component Array Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2, 3.5, 3.5.1, 4, and 4.5, and Silverlight 5 before 5.1.20513.0, does not properly prevent changes to data in multidimensional arrays of structures, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via (1) a crafted .NET Framework application or (2) a crafted Silverlight application, aka "Array Access Violation Vulnerability."

The weakness was disclosed 07/09/2013 by Alon Fliess as MS13-052 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). The advisory is shared at support.microsoft.com. The public release happened without involvement of Microsoft. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-3131 since 04/17/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67209 (MS13-052: Vulnerabilities in .NET Framework and Silverlight Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2861561)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90896 (Microsoft .NET Framework and Silverlight Multiple Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS13-052)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (67209), OSVDB (94959†), Secunia (SA54025†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-40383†). The entries VDB-9392, VDB-9393, VDB-9394 and VDB-9395 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
