win32k.sys in the kernel-mode drivers in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, and Windows 7 SP1 does not properly handle objects in memory, which allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application, aka "Win32k Information Disclosure Vulnerability."
The weakness was published 07/09/2013 by Yinliang with Tencent PC Manager as MS13-053 as confirmed bulletin (Website). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-3167 since 04/17/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack needs to be approached locally. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67210 (MS13-053: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel-Mode Driver Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2850851)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90894 (Microsoft Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Remote Code Execution (MS13-053)).
Applying the patch MS13-JUL is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
