Buffer overflow in win32k.sys in the kernel-mode drivers in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, and Windows 7 SP1 allows local users to cause a denial of service (system hang) via a crafted application that leverages improper handling of objects in memory, aka "Win32k Buffer Overflow Vulnerability."

The weakness was released 07/09/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk (j00ru) with Google Security Team as MS13-053 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The public release happened without involvement of Microsoft. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-3172 since 04/17/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67210 (MS13-053: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel-Mode Driver Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2850851)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90894 (Microsoft Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Remote Code Execution (MS13-053)).

Applying the patch MS13-053 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
