Buffer overflow in win32k.sys in the kernel-mode drivers in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, and Windows RT allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application that leverages improper handling of objects in memory, aka "Win32k Buffer Overwrite Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 07/09/2013 by Wen Yujie and Guo Pengfei with Qihoo 360 Security Center as MS13-053 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-3173 since 04/17/2013. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack. The successful exploitation needs a authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67210 (MS13-053: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel-Mode Driver Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2850851)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90894 (Microsoft Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Remote Code Execution (MS13-053)).
Applying the patch MS13-053 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
