A vulnerability was found in phpMyAdmin up to 4.6.3/4.4.15.7 (Database Administration Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component User Group Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. An issue was discovered in phpMyAdmin. In the "User group" and "Designer" features, a user can execute an SQL injection attack against the account of the control user. All 4.6.x versions (prior to 4.6.4) and 4.4.x versions (prior to 4.4.15.8) are affected.
The bug was discovered 08/06/2016. The weakness was presented 12/11/2016 by Emanuel Bronshtein (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-6616 since 08/06/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1505.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 23 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
